The town of Locarno is the largest town on the Swiss side of the lake. The town has several parks and gardens, the best of which are the Giardini Pubblici.

Cannobio is the first town in Italy, for those driving southwards along the lake shore, is also one of the best Maggiore towns, being far enough up the western shore to be left quieter than the towns closer to the Lombardy Plain.

A stone at the edge of the town records that the townsfolk played their part in the Italian War of independence by attacking an Austrian fleet on the lake in 1859. The town is unfortunately split by the main road which makes it seem fragmented, but the old quarter with its narrow winding streets is delightful and deserves a visit." linktext[3]="
